Kochi will witness a ten-day visual extravaganza of the most exciting water sport action, the Volvo Ocean Race that an Indian port city Kochi has been chosen for the stopover.

The Race will commence its round-the-world marathon sailing in October 2008 and cover more than 39,000 nautical miles, visiting 11 ports across the world. Starting from Alicante in Spain, it would stopover at Cape Town, Cochin (The Kochi stopover is scheduled from December 3rd to 13th, 2008), Qingdao, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm, before reaching the finishing line at St.Petersburg.

Spain has emerged as a hotbed for world class sailing events after 32nd Americas Cup* in Valencia in June 2007. Valencia is the third largest city on Spain's eastern coast.  The 32nd America’s Cup has been the largest, most open and widely accessible America’s Cup in 156 years of history. Over 6-million people have visited its venues, and its television footage has reached 4-billion viewers. The distance between Valencia and Alicante, the Volvo Ocean Race 2008 - 2009 starting point in Spain, is approximately 114 miles.

The Kochi stopover is an opportunity to showcase India as an emerging economic giant while highlighting the country’s business potential as well as its tourism potential. The Race and the stopover events would be extensively covered in electronic, print and news media across the world, ranging from newspapers to lifestyle and glamour magazines.

The teams consist of professional sports men and sports women drawn from different countries. The participants require physical endurance and sheer grit of the highest order to deal with life at the extreme, as they race day and night for more than 20 days at a stretch in some of the legs, facing potential dangers such as gales and storms, ice bergs, ocean debris and the whales! The Race is thus, the ultimate in world class water-sporting competition on the extreme edge of adventure, drama and endurance.

Seven teams drawn from different countries of the world like USA, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Sweden and Spain have already confirmed their participation in the Race this year. The Race represents the ultimate in world class extreme adventure sporting competition - a unique mix of onshore glamour and offshore drama and endurance.

The simulator will offer visitors an opportunity to see exactly what life at the extreme is like on board a 70ft 'Volvo Ocean Race Yacht'. This three minute ride will take you through a thrilling simulation of the legendary Volvo Ocean Race - a unique sailing experience without having to go anywhere near the water.
